First Trimester checklist

The first trimester is an exciting time filled with changes and preparations for the arrival of your little one. As a medical doctor, I’m here to guide you through the essential steps to ensure a healthy and happy pregnancy during these initial weeks. Let’s dive into your comprehensive first trimester checklist:

  1.  Confirmation of Pregnancy:

    • Recognize presumptive signs of pregnancy, such as missed periods, nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and frequent urination.
    • Confirm pregnancy with a home pregnancy test or visit your healthcare provider for a blood test.
  2.  First Prenatal Appointment:

    • Schedule your first prenatal appointment with an obstetrician or midwife.
    • Discuss your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions or medications.
    • Receive guidance on prenatal vitamins and supplements.
  3.  Ultrasound Scan and Prenatal Testing:

      • First Ultrasound: Arrange for your first ultrasound scan to assess the viability of the pregnancy, estimate gestational age, and detect any potential complications.
      • Prenatal Screening Tests: Discuss available prenatal screening tests with your healthcare provider to assess the risk of genetic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities
  4. Nutrition and Diet:

    • Consume a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, including:
      • Folate: Crucial for fetal development; found in leafy greens, citrus fruits, and fortified grains.
      • Iron: Supports blood production; found in lean meats, beans, and fortified cereals.
      • Calcium: Vital for bone development; found in dairy products, tofu, and leafy greens.
    • Limit caffeine intake to 200 mg per day, equivalent to:
      • 2 cups of brewed coffee (8 oz each) or
      • 4 cups of brewed tea (8 oz each).
    • Avoid high-mercury fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, due to potential fetal neurotoxicity.
    • Minimize consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, raw seafood, and deli meats to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.
  5.  Hydration:

    • Aim to drink at least 8-10 cups (64-80 ounces) of water per day to stay hydrated and support healthy blood flow.
  6.  Exercise and Physical Activity:

    • Engage in regular moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
    • Incorporate a variety of activities, such as walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga, to promote cardiovascular health and flexibility.
    • Consider adding resistance training exercises using light weights or resistance bands to maintain muscle tone and strength. Focus on compound movements targeting major muscle groups, and avoid exercises that involve lying flat on your back after the first trimester.
    • Incorporate pelvic floor exercises into your routine to strengthen pelvic floor which will help prevent incontinence and pelvic prolapse after delivery.

  7.  Skincare and Makeup Safety:
      • Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: Opt for pregnancy-safe skincare products free from potentially harmful ingredients such as retinoids (retinol, retinyl palmitate), salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and hydroquinone.
      • Choose gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens formulated with pregnancy-safe ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and zinc oxide.
      • Makeup Considerations: Select pregnancy-safe makeup products devoid of toxic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and synthetic fragrances.
      • Look for mineral-based foundations, blushes, and eyeshadows without harmful additives and opt for water-based or mineral sunscreens to shield your skin from UV radiation.

  8. Warning Signs and Symptoms:
        • Be vigilant for warning signs that may indicate complications and warrant immediate medical attention, including:
          • Vaginal bleeding or spotting
          • Severe abdominal pain or cramping
          • Persistent vomiting and dehydration
          • Severe headaches or visual disturbances
          • Decreased fetal movement after 24 weeks gestation
